Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ashoka (Saraca asoca) has a long-standing history in traditional Indian medicine, particularly in Ayurveda, for the treatment of menstrual disorders, including cramps (dysmenorrhea), irregular menstruation, and excessive bleeding. Its bark is a key component of several classical Ayurvedic formulations like Ashokarishta, which is prescribed for various gynecological complaints. Traditional texts describe Ashoka as having properties that support the female reproductive system, reduce pain, and balance menstrual cycles.

Scientific research on Ashoka’s efficacy for menstrual cramps is limited. A few small studies and preclinical investigations suggest that extracts of Ashoka bark may have anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and estrogenic effects, which could theoretically alleviate menstrual discomfort. However, these studies are either animal-based or involve small human samples, and robust, high-quality clinical trials are lacking. Therefore, while Ashoka is widely used in traditional practice and some preliminary pharmacological basis exists, strong scientific validation is currently insufficient.

In summary, Ashoka’s use for menstrual cramps is primarily justified by traditional Ayurvedic practice, with a moderate level of traditional evidence and only limited scientific support at this time.
