Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), for a variety of ailments including menstrual discomfort. Its traditional use for menstrual cramps is largely attributed to its anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and mild estrogenic properties. In TCM, licorice is often combined with other herbs to harmonize and enhance the effects of herbal formulas used to treat gynecological disorders, such as dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation).

From a scientific standpoint, there is limited direct evidence to support the use of licorice root specifically for menstrual cramps. Some laboratory studies have demonstrated that compounds in licorice, such as glycyrrhizin and flavonoids, exhibit anti-inflammatory and muscle-relaxant effects, which could theoretically help alleviate uterine muscle spasms associated with menstrual cramps. Moreover, certain constituents in licorice have weak estrogen-like (phytoestrogenic) effects, which might influence menstrual symptoms.

However, clinical trials directly evaluating licorice root for menstrual cramp relief are scarce. Most of the evidence supporting its use is anecdotal or comes from broader herbal formulations rather than licorice root alone. As such, while licorice root is traditionally used for menstrual discomfort, definitive scientific validation is lacking, and its use for this purpose should be approached with caution, especially due to potential side effects (e.g., hypertension, electrolyte imbalance) with prolonged use.
