Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Magnesium is used to support or treat menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea), and there is moderate scientific evidence to support its efficacy. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated the role of magnesium supplementation in managing menstrual pain. Magnesium is thought to help by relaxing the smooth muscle in the uterus and by modulating prostaglandin synthesis, which contributes to the pain and inflammation experienced during menstruation. A systematic review published in Magnesium Research (2017) and another in Obstetrics & Gynecology Science (2020) found that magnesium supplements can reduce both the intensity and duration of menstrual pain compared to placebo, although the effect size is generally modest. The studies also suggest that magnesium may be particularly beneficial for women who have low baseline dietary magnesium intake. However, not all trials have found a significant benefit, and methodological quality varies. Most guidelines consider magnesium a reasonable, low-risk adjunct for dysmenorrhea, especially when conventional therapies (such as NSAIDs) are insufficient or contraindicated. Overall, while further large-scale studies are warranted, the current body of evidence supports the use of magnesium for menstrual cramps with a moderate degree of confidence.
