Evidence supporting the use of: Magnesium citrate malate
For the health condition: Cramps (menstrual)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Magnesium citrate malate is a highly bioavailable form of magnesium, and magnesium supplementation has some scientific validation for use in reducing menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea). Several clinical trials and reviews have reported that magnesium can help alleviate the severity and duration of menstrual pain. The proposed mechanism is that magnesium acts as a natural calcium antagonist, helping to relax smooth muscle tissue, including the uterus, and reducing the prostaglandin-mediated contractions that cause cramping. A 2017 systematic review in the journal Pain Physician concluded that magnesium supplementation can be beneficial for primary dysmenorrhea, although the overall evidence quality is moderate due to variability in study design and magnesium forms used. Most studies have used magnesium oxide or other salts, but citrate and malate forms are known for superior absorption, making them reasonable choices for supplementation. Despite these promising findings, not all studies show significant benefit, and more high-quality randomized controlled trials using magnesium citrate malate specifically are needed. Nonetheless, current evidence supports magnesium’s modest but real effect in reducing menstrual cramps, and it is commonly recommended as a non-pharmacological intervention.
