Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Artemisia, particularly Artemisia absinthium (wormwood), has been investigated for its potential role in supporting or treating Crohn’s Disease. Several small clinical studies have suggested that wormwood may help reduce symptoms and steroid dependence in Crohn’s patients. One randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in 2007 in Phytomedicine demonstrated that patients receiving Artemisia absinthium extract experienced significant improvement in symptoms and quality of life, with some patients able to discontinue corticosteroid use. The proposed mechanisms include anti-inflammatory effects, immune modulation, and antioxidant properties.

However, the body of evidence remains limited, with only a few small-scale studies and lack of large, multicenter trials. Systematic reviews note the promising results but caution that safety and efficacy are not yet well established, and further research is needed. Traditional use of Artemisia in digestive complaints exists, but its specific application in Crohn’s disease is a more recent, scientifically investigated phenomenon. Overall, Artemisia's use for Crohn’s disease is supported by preliminary clinical evidence, but should not be used as a replacement for standard therapy without medical supervision.
