Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bael (Aegle marmelos), a fruit commonly used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, has a long history of use for a range of gastrointestinal disorders, including dysentery, diarrhea, and general digestive complaints. Its use for Crohn’s Disease specifically, however, is not well-documented in either traditional texts or modern clinical literature. Most references to Bael’s gastrointestinal applications focus on its astringent properties, believed to soothe inflamed mucosa and reduce diarrhea, which are symptoms sometimes associated with Crohn’s Disease. In Ayurveda, Bael is often recommended to promote gut health and balance digestive disturbances, but these recommendations are based on general principles rather than targeted evidence for Crohn’s Disease.

Scientific investigation into Bael’s effects shows some antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties in cell and animal studies. However, there are no controlled human trials evaluating Bael for Crohn’s Disease. Therefore, its use in this context is primarily based on traditional herbal practice and empirical use for gastrointestinal problems, rather than on direct scientific validation for Crohn’s Disease management. The level of evidence supporting Bael's use for Crohn’s Disease itself remains weak, and it should not be substituted for evidence-based medical therapies without professional guidance.
