Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacterium animalis lactis has been investigated for its potential benefits in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn's Disease, but the evidence supporting its use specifically for Crohn's Disease is limited and not robust. Some small-scale studies and preliminary clinical trials have examined the impact of probiotic supplementation (including B. animalis lactis, often in combination with other strains) on gut microbiota composition, immune modulation, and maintenance of remission in IBD patients. However, most of the clinical evidence focuses on ulcerative colitis or pouchitis rather than Crohn's Disease specifically.

A few randomized controlled trials have included B. animalis lactis as part of multi-strain probiotic formulations. These studies have shown modest improvements in gut barrier function or reductions in inflammatory markers, but consistent, clinically meaningful benefits in Crohn's Disease activity or relapse prevention remain unproven. The European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation and major gastroenterology guidelines currently do not recommend routine use of probiotics, including B. animalis lactis, for Crohn’s Disease due to insufficient evidence.

In summary, while there is a scientific rationale (modulating the gut microbiome and immune response), and some early research suggests possible benefit, the overall quality and consistency of evidence for B. animalis lactis in Crohn's Disease is low. More large, well-controlled studies are needed before it can be recommended as a standard therapy for this condition.
