Evidence supporting the use of: Clostridium butyricum
For the health condition: Crohn's Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Clostridium butyricum is a probiotic bacterium that has been studied for its effects on intestinal health, including potential benefits for inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's Disease. There is some scientific evidence to support its use, but the quality and quantity of evidence are still limited, and much of the research has been conducted in Asia, particularly Japan and China. Animal studies and a few small clinical trials suggest that C. butyricum can modulate the gut microbiota, increase production of short-chain fatty acids (notably butyrate), and reduce intestinal inflammation. Butyrate is known to have anti-inflammatory properties and supports the health of the colonic mucosa, which may be beneficial in Crohn's Disease.
A handful of clinical studies have explored C. butyricum supplementation in patients with Crohn’s Disease and ulcerative colitis, often in combination with other therapies. These studies have reported improvements in clinical symptoms and reductions in inflammatory markers. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the journal Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (2018) found that C. butyricum MIYAIRI 588 as an adjunct to standard therapy could help maintain remission in Crohn’s Disease patients. However, these studies are small, heterogeneous, and sometimes lack rigorous controls. Large, high-quality, placebo-controlled trials are still lacking.
In summary, while there is preliminary scientific evidence to justify the use of C. butyricum in Crohn’s Disease, the overall evidence is modest (rated 2/5). Its use is not based on longstanding tradition, but rather on emerging research into its anti-inflammatory and microbiota-modulating effects.
