Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactobacillus plantarum is a probiotic bacterium commonly found in fermented foods and as a supplement. Its use in Crohn’s Disease is supported by some scientific evidence, but the overall quality and quantity of research are limited, and larger, more definitive studies are needed.

Several small-scale clinical trials and animal studies have explored the effects of L. plantarum on inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn’s Disease. Some studies have shown that L. plantarum can help modulate gut microbiota, enhance intestinal barrier function, and reduce inflammatory markers in the gut. For example, a few pilot clinical trials have reported modest improvements in symptoms or reductions in inflammation in Crohn’s patients receiving L. plantarum as part of a probiotic mix. However, these studies often have small sample sizes, short durations, and sometimes combine L. plantarum with other probiotic strains, making it difficult to attribute effects to this species alone.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that probiotics, in general, have limited and inconsistent benefits in Crohn’s Disease, with some evidence suggesting a possible role in maintaining remission rather than treating active disease. Guidelines from major gastroenterological societies do not currently recommend L. plantarum as a standard therapy for Crohn’s Disease due to insufficient evidence. In summary, while there is some scientific investigation into its use, support for L. plantarum in Crohn’s Disease remains preliminary.
