Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) contains several bioactive compounds, most notably glycyrrhizin, which has been studied for its antiviral properties. There is some scientific evidence suggesting that glycyrrhizin can inhibit the replication of certain viruses, including cytomegalovirus (CMV), at least in laboratory (in vitro) settings. Specifically, research has shown that glycyrrhizin can reduce CMV replication in cultured cells by interfering with viral gene expression and replication cycles. For example, a study published in Antiviral Research (2003) demonstrated that glycyrrhizin could inhibit human CMV replication in vitro, with proposed mechanisms involving modulation of intracellular signaling pathways and host immune responses.

However, while these laboratory findings are promising, there is a lack of robust clinical evidence (human studies) to support the efficacy or safety of licorice root or its constituents in treating or supporting CMV infections in humans. Most studies to date have been preclinical, and the translation of these effects to actual clinical benefit remains unproven. Additionally, licorice root can have significant side effects, including hypertension and electrolyte imbalances, particularly with prolonged or high-dose use.

In summary, while licorice root has a scientific basis for potential activity against CMV based on experimental data, the overall evidence is considered weak (rated 2/5) due to the absence of quality clinical trials. Its use for CMV should be approached with caution, and more research is needed before it can be recommended for this purpose.
