Evidence supporting the use of: Borneol
For the health condition: Dandruff
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Borneol is a bicyclic organic compound found naturally in several species of plants, such as camphor and rosemary. Its use for dandruff is primarily rooted in traditional medicine, especially within Chinese and other Asian herbal traditions, where borneol is often included in topical preparations for its perceived anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Traditional texts and formulations may mention borneol in the context of scalp health or as a component in complex mixtures aimed at treating dandruff or itchy scalp conditions. However, modern scientific research directly evaluating borneol’s efficacy against dandruff (specifically, the flaking and scaling caused by seborrheic dermatitis and Malassezia yeast) is extremely limited or absent. While borneol does have some documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory settings, there are no robust clinical trials or comprehensive studies validating its use for dandruff in humans. Therefore, its continued inclusion in anti-dandruff products is justified more by historical and traditional use rather than by strong scientific evidence.
