Evidence supporting the use of: China Rose
For the health condition: Dandruff
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
China Rose, also known as Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, has been traditionally used in various cultures for hair care, including the management of dandruff. Folklore and traditional medicine systems in India and Southeast Asia often recommend hibiscus flowers and leaves in hair oils, masks, and rinses to promote scalp health and reduce dandruff. The plant is believed to have antimicrobial and soothing properties, which might help in alleviating mild scalp irritation and flakiness associated with dandruff.
However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of China Rose for dandruff is limited. While there are some laboratory studies suggesting that extracts of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis may exhibit mild antifungal or antimicrobial activity, direct clinical studies on its effectiveness against dandruff (which is commonly associated with the fungus Malassezia) are lacking. Most recommendations are based on anecdotal evidence and traditional practices rather than rigorous scientific validation. Therefore, while China Rose continues to be a popular ingredient in herbal hair care, its use for dandruff is primarily justified by tradition, and current scientific support is relatively weak.
