Evidence supporting the use of: Spilanthes
For the health condition: Dandruff
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Spilanthes (commonly known as "toothache plant") has a long history of traditional use in various cultures, especially in South America, Africa, and Asia. Its applications are most notable in oral care and as an anti-inflammatory or analgesic remedy. In traditional herbal medicine, Spilanthes extracts have sometimes been applied topically to address minor skin irritations, infections, or fungal conditions. The rationale for its use against dandruff stems from its reported antimicrobial and antifungal properties, which could, in theory, help control the Malassezia fungus implicated in dandruff.
However, while there is some traditional precedent for using Spilanthes in skin and scalp care, there is very limited direct ethnobotanical documentation specifically citing its use for dandruff. Most references are tangential, relating to its use in general scalp or skin health. Scientific literature on Spilanthes for dandruff is extremely sparse, and there are no high-quality human clinical trials confirming its efficacy for this condition. The evidence is therefore primarily anecdotal or traditional, and scientific validation is lacking. As such, the traditional use rating is low (1/5), reflecting the weak and indirect nature of the support for this application.
