Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Angelica (Angelica archangelica) has a long history of use in traditional European and Asian herbal medicine, where it has been employed as a "tonic" for general weakness and "debility", especially in convalescence or during recovery from illness. Traditional herbalists have attributed to Angelica properties such as warming, stimulating, and strengthening, often recommending it for individuals experiencing fatigue, lack of appetite, or low energy. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), related species like Angelica sinensis ("Dong Quai") are also used to "tonify the blood" and treat weakness, particularly in women. Historical European texts, such as Culpeper's "Herbal", list Angelica for recovery from "all sorts of cold diseases" and as a restorative. Despite this traditional backing, modern scientific studies directly investigating Angelica's efficacy for "debility" or general weakness are lacking. Some laboratory and animal studies have shown potential adaptogenic, anti-fatigue, or immunomodulatory effects for compounds found in Angelica species, but these are not robust, large-scale human clinical trials. Therefore, while Angelica's use for debility is well-rooted in traditional herbal practices, scientific validation remains limited. Its use for this purpose should be considered based on tradition rather than strong clinical evidence.
