Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Antler horn, often referred to as "deer antler velvet," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for the treatment of debility and general weakness. In TCM, it is believed to tonify the "Kidney Yang," support vitality, and promote recovery from fatigue or aging-related decline. Ancient texts, such as the Shennong Bencao Jing and later pharmacopeias, describe antler horn as a restorative tonic, particularly for those with symptoms of frailty, low energy, or convalescence after illness. The traditional rationale for its use is based on the doctrine of signatures—the belief that substances with vigorous growth, like antlers, can impart strength and vitality to humans.

Modern scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited. Some animal studies and small-scale human trials have explored the effects of deer antler extracts on physical performance, immune modulation, and hormone levels, but results are inconsistent and often lack methodological rigor. No large, high-quality clinical trials have conclusively demonstrated that antler horn or deer antler velvet is effective for treating debility in humans. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition, robust scientific validation is lacking, and its efficacy for debility remains unproven by modern standards.
