Durabolin is the trade name for nandrolone phenylpropionate, an anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS). Its use in treating debility, including cachexia (wasting syndromes) and chronic debilitating illnesses, is supported by scientific evidence, primarily from clinical studies and medical practice prior to the widespread recognition of AAS side effects and regulatory limitations.

Nandrolone compounds, such as Durabolin, have been used therapeutically to promote protein synthesis, increase lean body mass, and stimulate appetite, especially in patients with conditions such as chronic infections, severe trauma, cancer, or HIV/AIDS—situations often associated with debility or muscle wasting. Several controlled studies from the latter half of the 20th century demonstrated improvements in nitrogen balance, body weight, and muscle mass among debilitated patients treated with nandrolone. For example, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (1975) showed positive effects of nandrolone on protein metabolism and physical strength in chronically ill patients. However, these benefits must be weighed against the risk of adverse effects, including virilization, cardiovascular complications, and hepatic dysfunction.

In modern medicine, the use of Durabolin for debility is largely restricted due to the potential for abuse and side effects, and safer alternatives are preferred. Nevertheless, the historical and clinical literature provides moderate scientific validation for its efficacy in supporting or treating debility in specific, carefully selected patients under medical supervision.
