Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flat-stem milk-vetch (Astragalus complanatus) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and related herbal systems. In TCM, this species, similar to the more widely known Astragalus membranaceus, is often classified as a "qi tonic," which means it is used to strengthen the body's vital energy, with debility (general weakness or lack of strength) being a common indication for such remedies. Historical texts and materia medica record the use of Flat-stem milk-vetch seeds (often called "Sha Yuan Zi") for tonifying the kidney and liver, and for improving vitality, stamina, and overall strength in those experiencing debility due to chronic illness, aging, or overexertion. However, scientific research specifically focused on Astragalus complanatus for debility or fatigue is limited. Most available studies are preclinical, examining the herb's potential antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically relate to improved vitality or reduced debility. There are a handful of animal studies suggesting adaptogenic and fatigue-reducing effects, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, the primary justification for its use in treating debility is based on traditional medical practice rather than strong scientific validation.
