Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Plantain (unspecified species, but often referring to Plantago major or Plantago lanceolata) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. In these traditions, plantain has been valued for its purported restorative and tonic properties, and has sometimes been used to help with general debility—a state of physical weakness or lack of energy. However, the historical evidence is largely based on folk practices and the writings of herbalists rather than rigorous clinical trials. In traditional medicine texts, plantain was recommended for its nutritive and gentle tonic effects, and was believed to help "build strength" after illness or in states of general weakness. There is, however, little to no direct scientific evidence supporting the use of plantain specifically for debility. Modern research on plantain has focused more on its anti-inflammatory, wound-healing, and antimicrobial properties, rather than on effects related to energy, stamina, or recovery from weakness. Thus, while its use for debility is rooted in tradition, there is scant scientific validation, and the evidence supporting its efficacy for this particular indication is weak.
