Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Siler (Saposhnikovia divaricata), also known as Fang Feng in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine. Within the traditional framework, Siler is classified as a herb that "expels wind" and is often included in formulas intended to address general weakness, fatigue, or "debility," especially when these are thought to be caused by external pathogens or an imbalance in the body's vital energy (Qi). The use of Siler for debility is therefore rooted in TCM theory and historical practice, rather than modern biomedical evidence.

There is limited scientific research directly supporting the use of Siler for general debility as understood in Western medicine. Some studies suggest that Siler may have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, but these are not specific to the treatment of debility. Most available evidence consists of traditional usage, historical texts, and some case reports within the context of TCM. Systematic reviews and clinical trials specifically assessing Siler for debility are lacking. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition and longstanding inclusion in classic formulas, the scientific validation remains weak to moderate, meriting a rating of 2 out of 5 for evidence support.
