Somatropin is a recombinant form of human growth hormone (GH) that is used therapeutically to treat several conditions characterized by growth hormone deficiency or insufficiency. The use of somatropin for "debility"—a general term that refers to physical weakness or frailty, often associated with chronic illness or aging—has some scientific basis, although its use is not universally endorsed for this indication and should be considered carefully within clinical context.

Clinical studies have shown that somatropin can improve lean body mass, physical performance, and overall quality of life in patients with adult growth hormone deficiency (AGHD). In these cases, "debility" is specifically linked to a deficiency of endogenous GH, and replacement therapy with somatropin is FDA-approved. There is also evidence supporting its use in muscle wasting associated with HIV/AIDS, where improvements in body composition and physical strength have been documented.

However, in elderly individuals or the general debilitated population without specific GH deficiency, evidence is mixed. Some studies suggest modest improvements in muscle mass and subjective well-being, but these are often offset by significant risks, including edema, joint pain, insulin resistance, and potential malignancy promotion. Therefore, while somatropin is scientifically validated for debility when due to GH deficiency or certain catabolic states, its routine use in general debility is not supported by strong evidence and is not widely recommended.
