Vitamin D is scientifically recognized for its crucial role in bone and muscle health, and its deficiency can lead to symptoms of general weakness or "debility." Several studies have demonstrated that low levels of vitamin D are associated with muscle weakness, reduced physical performance, and increased risk of falls, especially in the elderly. Correction of vitamin D deficiency through supplementation has been shown to improve muscle function and decrease the risk of falls in older adults. For example, a 2011 meta-analysis published in the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism found that vitamin D supplementation in older individuals with low baseline levels led to modest improvements in muscle strength and physical performance.

Historically, vitamin D was used to treat rickets (a disease of debility in children caused by deficiency), and later, its role in preventing osteomalacia (bone weakening and fatigue in adults) became well-established. While vitamin D is not a direct treatment for all causes of debility, it is commonly used to address generalized weakness and fatigue when vitamin D deficiency is present. However, evidence for benefit in individuals with normal vitamin D levels or in treating non-specific debility not related to deficiency is limited. Therefore, while scientific evidence supports vitamin D supplementation for debility due to deficiency, its effectiveness in broader contexts is less certain.
