Evidence supporting the use of: Brahmi
For the health condition: Dementia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine for enhancing cognitive function and memory. In recent years, there has been increasing scientific interest in evaluating its effects on dementia and cognitive decline. Several preclinical studies in animal models have shown that Brahmi extracts may possess neuroprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. Some small-scale human clinical trials have reported improvements in memory, attention, and cognitive processing in healthy adults and the elderly with mild cognitive impairment. However, the evidence for its effectiveness specifically in dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, is limited and inconclusive.
Most human studies have been short-term, with small sample sizes and variable methodologies. A few randomized controlled trials suggest possible benefits on certain cognitive domains, but systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that while Brahmi may have a modest positive effect on cognitive function, the quality of evidence is low, especially for its use in established dementia. More robust, long-term clinical trials are needed to determine its true efficacy and safety profile in patients with dementia. As such, Brahmi's use for dementia is supported by both traditional use and preliminary scientific evidence, but it is not yet a validated treatment according to current clinical standards.
