Evidence supporting the use of: Convolvulus prostratus
For the health condition: Dementia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Convolvulus prostratus (also known as Shankhpushpi) has a long-standing history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for supporting cognitive function and treating memory-related disorders, including dementia. The plant is traditionally valued as a "medhya rasayana," or a memory-enhancing herb. Ayurvedic texts describe its use for improving intellect, reducing anxiety, and supporting neurological health. The rationale for its use in dementia stems from these traditional applications, rather than rigorous clinical evidence in humans.
Scientific studies on Convolvulus prostratus are limited and primarily preclinical. Some animal studies have reported that extracts of the plant may enhance learning and memory in rodent models, possibly due to antioxidant, neuroprotective, or cholinergic activity. For example, studies have shown improvements in memory retention and reduced amnesia in mice and rats when given Shankhpushpi extracts. However, these effects have not been robustly tested or validated in human clinical trials, and the active constituents responsible for these effects are still under investigation.
In summary, the use of Convolvulus prostratus for dementia is primarily justified by traditional use, with some preliminary scientific evidence in animals but insufficient high-quality evidence in humans. Its use should therefore be considered as adjunctive or complementary, pending further research.
