Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Fo-Ti (also known as Polygonum multiflorum or He Shou Wu) is traditionally used in Chinese medicine as a tonic for longevity, vitality, and for supporting cognitive function in aging individuals. While Fo-Ti has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, including anecdotal claims regarding its benefits for memory and mental clarity, there is minimal direct scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness specifically for dementia or other neurodegenerative diseases. The traditional rationale for its use is based on the belief that it nourishes the "kidney and liver," which are thought to govern aging and brain health according to Chinese medical theory. However, modern research is limited; a few animal studies have suggested possible neuroprotective effects, such as reduced oxidative stress, but these findings have not been robustly replicated in human clinical trials. Therefore, while Fo-Ti is used traditionally to support cognitive function and may be recommended by some practitioners for dementia, there is insufficient scientific validation for its efficacy in treating or preventing this condition. Caution is also advised due to potential liver toxicity associated with Fo-Ti use.
