Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Ginkgo biloba has been studied for its potential benefits in treating dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. The use of Ginkgo for cognitive complaints and memory problems originates from traditional Chinese medicine, but its application for dementia is primarily supported by modern scientific research. Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated standardized Ginkgo extracts, most notably EGb 761, in individuals with mild to moderate dementia. Some studies have shown that Ginkgo may offer modest improvements in cognitive function, activities of daily living, and global clinical assessment compared to placebo. For example, a 2016 Cochrane review concluded that Ginkgo appears to be safe and may have a small but significant effect on cognitive function and activities of daily living in people with dementia, although the quality and consistency of evidence varies. The effect size is generally considered modest, and some studies have failed to show benefit. Side effects are usually mild but can include gastrointestinal symptoms and increased risk of bleeding, especially when combined with anticoagulants. International guidelines do not universally recommend Ginkgo for dementia, but it is sometimes used as an adjunct therapy. In summary, there is scientific evidence suggesting a possible benefit of Ginkgo for dementia, but the magnitude of benefit is limited and should be weighed against potential risks.
