Evidence supporting the use of: Ginkgo flavone glycoside
For the health condition: Dementia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Ginkgo flavone glycosides are a primary active component of Ginkgo biloba extracts, which have been used traditionally in Chinese medicine for various cognitive ailments. In the context of dementia, however, there is a moderate level of scientific evidence supporting their use. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated standardized Ginkgo biloba extracts, particularly EGb 761, which contains 24% flavone glycosides, for the treatment of mild to moderate dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.
Some studies have shown that Ginkgo biloba extract may improve cognitive function, activities of daily living, and global clinical assessment in patients with dementia, though the effect size is generally modest. Meta-analyses, such as those published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and JAMA, have found statistically significant but clinically small benefits compared to placebo. The quality of evidence varies, with some trials showing potential bias and heterogeneity in results. Major clinical guidelines do not uniformly recommend Ginkgo for dementia due to these inconsistencies and the modest efficacy.
In summary, there is scientific evidence, though not robust or universally accepted, that Ginkgo flavone glycosides can provide mild benefits in dementia. The evidence does not fully support its widespread use as a first-line therapy, but it is more than purely traditional or anecdotal.
