Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Ginkgo flavonglycosides are active compounds found in Ginkgo biloba extracts, which have been studied for their potential cognitive benefits, including support for dementia. The use of Ginkgo for cognitive decline has a long history in traditional medicine, but in recent decades, it has also been the subject of clinical research. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated standardized Ginkgo biloba extract, particularly EGb 761, for dementia and mild cognitive impairment. Some studies suggest that Ginkgo may provide modest improvements in cognition, activities of daily living, and global assessment in patients with dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia), particularly when compared to placebo. For example, a 2015 Cochrane review found some evidence of benefit but noted that effect sizes were small and clinical relevance uncertain.

However, the overall quality of evidence is mixed. Some large, well-conducted trials have found no significant benefit. Systematic reviews generally conclude that Ginkgo biloba appears to be safe and may have small positive effects on cognitive function, but the strength of evidence is moderate at best. Major guidelines do not universally recommend it as a first-line treatment for dementia, but it may be considered as an adjunct. In summary, Ginkgo flavonglycosides have some scientific validation for use in dementia, but the evidence is not robust or conclusive, resulting in a moderate rating for its support in this indication.
