Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), are commonly explored for their potential role in supporting cognitive health and treating dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. Scientific interest stems from the fact that DHA is an important structural component of neuronal membranes in the brain, and omega-3s possess anti-inflammatory properties that may theoretically slow neurodegeneration. Epidemiological studies suggest that populations with higher dietary intake of omega-3-rich fish tend to have lower rates of cognitive decline. However, evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is mixed and generally underwhelming.
Systematic reviews and meta-analyses (such as those published in the Cochrane Database and JAMA) have generally concluded that omega-3 supplementation does not significantly improve cognitive function or slow dementia progression in people already diagnosed with dementia. Some studies show minor cognitive benefits in individuals with mild cognitive impairment or in healthy older adults, but these effects are modest and not consistently replicated. Overall, while there is a plausible biological rationale and some weak supportive data, current scientific consensus is that omega-3 fatty acids have limited clinical efficacy as a treatment for established dementia. Ongoing research continues to explore whether earlier intervention or higher doses might yield more meaningful effects.
