Albizia species, particularly Albizia julibrissin (commonly known as Persian silk tree or Mimosa tree), have a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for mood-related conditions, including depression, anxiety, and emotional distress. The flowers (He Huan Hua) and bark (He Huan Pi) are traditionally used as calming agents, "spirit tranquilizers," and remedies for insomnia and irritability. Historical texts and TCM literature often recommend Albizia as a remedy to "calm the spirit" and "relieve constraint," concepts roughly analogous to mood stabilization in Western medical paradigms.
Scientific evidence for Albizia’s antidepressant effects is limited and primarily based on animal studies and in vitro research. Some preclinical studies suggest that extracts of Albizia julibrissin may have antidepressant-like effects in rodents, possibly through modulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, or via anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective mechanisms. However, there are no robust clinical trials in humans demonstrating efficacy for depression, and the precise mechanisms remain to be fully elucidated. Thus, while its use for depression is well-established in traditional medicine, scientific validation is still preliminary and not sufficient to support its routine use for this purpose in mainstream clinical practice.
