In many cultures, chamomile tea has been consumed for its calming effects, and it has been used in traditional medicine to promote relaxation and emotional balance. The flower contains several bioactive compounds, including apigenin, which is thought to have anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) and mild sedative properties via its action on GABA receptors in the brain.

Regarding depression specifically, the evidence for chamomile as a treatment is limited and mostly derived from traditional use rather than robust scientific research. Some clinical studies have explored chamomile’s effects on anxiety and depressive symptoms, often in patients with co-occurring anxiety and depression, but these studies tend to be small and preliminary.
