Chamomile (Matricaria recutita) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for a variety of ailments, primarily as a mild sedative and for easing anxiety and insomnia. Its use for depression specifically is less well-documented, but traditional herbalists often recommended chamomile for "low spirits," nervousness, and mood disturbances, which may overlap with depressive symptoms. The calming effects are generally attributed to its apigenin content, which can bind to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain, producing a mild tranquilizing effect.
Scientific research investigating chamomile’s direct effects on depression is limited and mostly preliminary. A few small clinical trials, often with chamomile extracts rather than whole flowers, have explored its impact on depressive symptoms, usually in the context of comorbid anxiety or generalized anxiety disorder. One notable study (Amsterdam et al., 2012, Alternative Therapies) found a modest reduction in depressive symptoms among participants with comorbid anxiety and depression. However, the evidence is not robust, and most studies are small, short-term, and not specific to major depressive disorder.
