Evidence supporting the use of: Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)
For the health condition: Depression
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major catechin in green tea, has garnered scientific interest for its potential role in supporting or treating depression, though its use is not deeply rooted in traditional medicine specifically for mood disorders. Preclinical studies suggest that EGCG may exert antidepressant-like effects primarily through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. In animal models, EGCG has been shown to modulate neurotransmitter levels (such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine), inhibit monoamine oxidase activity, and upregulate brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), all mechanisms implicated in depression pathophysiology. Some small human studies and epidemiological research have hinted at an association between green tea consumption and lower prevalence of depressive symptoms, but these studies are generally observational and not specific to EGCG. Clinical trials directly investigating EGCG supplementation in individuals with depression are very limited and have produced inconclusive results. Consequently, while mechanistic and animal data are promising, strong clinical evidence is lacking. In summary, EGCG’s use for depression is supported by a scientific rationale and preclinical evidence, but the current level of clinical validation is low (evidence rating: 2/5). More rigorous human trials are needed to establish its efficacy and safety as a treatment for depression.
