Frankincense, derived from the resin of Boswellia species, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially within Ayurvedic and Middle Eastern traditions. Traditionally, frankincense has been valued for its calming properties and has been used in spiritual rituals and incense, which are believed to help alleviate stress, anxiety, and depressive states. However, the historical evidence for its use specifically as a treatment for depression is largely anecdotal or based on broader claims about mood and mental well-being rather than rigorous clinical documentation.
On the scientific front, there is emerging but limited evidence exploring the neuropsychiatric effects of frankincense. Some animal studies have suggested that incensole acetate, a compound found in frankincense, may have anxiolytic and antidepressive effects by influencing brain pathways related to mood regulation. Nevertheless, high-quality human clinical trials are lacking, and the evidence remains preliminary. Most scientific literature focuses on frankincense’s anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, rather than its effects on depression.
In summary, while frankincense is traditionally used for its potential mood-enhancing and calming effects, there is insufficient scientific validation to strongly support its use specifically for depression.
