Evidence supporting the use of: Indian frankincense
For the health condition: Depression
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Indian frankincense (Boswellia serrata) has a long history of use in Ayurvedic and traditional medicine, primarily for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and joint-supporting properties. Its use in supporting or treating depression, however, is based more on traditional beliefs rather than robust scientific evidence. In Ayurvedic texts, Boswellia is sometimes included in formulas intended to balance the mind and body, which can be interpreted within a holistic approach to mental health. However, there is minimal direct evidence in classical texts specifically linking Boswellia to the treatment of depression.
From a scientific perspective, research on Boswellia has focused on its active components, such as boswellic acids, known for modulating inflammatory pathways. Since inflammation has been implicated in the pathophysiology of depression, some hypothesize that Boswellia may have secondary mood-supporting effects through its anti-inflammatory actions. However, as of now, clinical studies directly evaluating Boswellia for depression in humans are scarce and largely preliminary. Most available studies are animal-based or explore related cognitive or neuroprotective effects rather than mood or depressive symptoms directly.
In summary, while Indian frankincense has traditional use in general wellness and holistic mental health support, there is insufficient clinical evidence to support its direct use for depression. Its application for this condition is therefore rated low and is justified mostly by traditional rather than scientific evidence.
