Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Nigella seed (Nigella sativa), also known as black seed or black cumin, has been traditionally used in various cultures for a broad range of ailments, including mood disturbances. In recent years, scientific interest has grown regarding its potential neuropsychiatric benefits, including the support or treatment of depression.

Several preclinical studies in animal models have indicated that extracts of Nigella sativa and its main active compound, thymoquinone, may exhibit antidepressant-like effects. These effects are thought to be mediated through modulation of neurotransmitter systems (such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine), anti-inflammatory properties, and antioxidant activity. For example, rodent studies have shown reduced depressive-like behaviors following administration of Nigella sativa extracts.

Human evidence, however, is limited. A few small clinical trials have investigated the effects of Nigella sativa supplementation on mood and psychological parameters. Some of these studies reported improvement in symptoms of anxiety and depression, particularly in patients with comorbid conditions (such as diabetes or metabolic syndrome), but methodological limitations such as small sample sizes and lack of standardized outcome measures restrict the strength of these findings.

In summary, while there is some scientific evidence (mainly preclinical and a few small clinical studies) suggesting that Nigella seed may have antidepressant effects, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is low. Larger, well-controlled human studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness for depression.
