Suma (Pfaffia paniculata), sometimes referred to as "Brazilian ginseng," has a long history of use in traditional South American herbal medicine. Traditionally, suma has been considered an adaptogen—a herb believed to help the body resist physical, chemical, or biological stressors. Folk medicine practitioners have used suma root to support energy, stamina, immune function, and occasionally mood or emotional well-being. However, these uses are largely based on anecdotal reports and indigenous knowledge rather than systematic clinical research.
With respect to depression, there are very limited studies examining suma’s effects. Some preclinical research suggests that suma root or its active compounds (such as pfaffic acids and saponins) may have adaptogenic effects and could potentially modulate stress responses in animal models. However, direct evidence supporting its efficacy as a treatment for depression in humans is lacking. There are no well-conducted human clinical trials specifically examining suma for depressive disorders. Therefore, while its use for depression is justified primarily by tradition and extrapolated adaptogenic properties, the scientific evidence is currently weak (rated 1/5).
