Evidence supporting the use of: Whey protin
For the health condition: Depression
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Whey protein has some scientific rationale for its potential use in supporting mood and depression, but the evidence is limited and preliminary. Whey protein is a rich source of the amino acid tryptophan, which serves as a precursor for serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation. Some small clinical studies and reviews have suggested that increased intake of tryptophan or tryptophan-rich proteins like whey may enhance brain serotonin levels and potentially improve mood or reduce depressive symptoms. For example, a few randomized controlled trials have indicated that whey protein supplementation could lead to improvements in stress and mild depressive symptoms, possibly by increasing brain serotonin synthesis.
However, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are low. Most studies have small sample sizes, short durations, and may not be directly applicable to clinically diagnosed depression. There is not yet strong evidence to support the use of whey protein as a primary or adjunctive treatment for depression. Major clinical guidelines for depression do not mention whey protein as a recommended intervention. Therefore, while there is some scientific interest and plausible mechanisms, the evidence currently rates as weak (2/5) and more robust research is needed before whey protein can be confidently recommended for depression support.
