Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Anamu (Petiveria alliacea) has been traditionally used in folk medicine across Central and South America for a variety of ailments, including skin conditions like dermatitis. Ethnobotanical reports document the application of Anamu leaves or extracts as a poultice or wash for skin irritations, rashes, and inflammatory conditions. This traditional use is likely rooted in the plant’s reputed antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, as observed in general herbal practice. However, while preclinical studies have identified some bioactive compounds in Anamu (such as dibenzyl trisulfide and flavonoids) that exhibit anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities in vitro or in animal models, there is a lack of direct scientific studies specifically evaluating the efficacy or safety of Anamu for treating human dermatitis. No published clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies support its direct benefit for dermatitis in humans. As such, while there is a basis in traditional herbal use, the current scientific evidence supporting Anamu's use for dermatitis is weak and largely anecdotal.
