Evidence supporting the use of: Bassia scoparia
For the health condition: Dermatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bassia scoparia (commonly known as Kochia scoparia or burning bush) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is referred to as "Di Fu Zi." Traditionally, its fruit has been used to support skin health and provide symptomatic relief of various dermatological conditions, including dermatitis, eczema, and pruritus. The use is primarily based on centuries-old herbal practices documented in Chinese materia medica, where infusions or topical applications are believed to have anti-inflammatory, anti-pruritic, and antimicrobial effects. However, modern scientific studies directly evaluating its efficacy for dermatitis are sparse and often preliminary. Some laboratory research suggests that extracts of Bassia scoparia may exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities, which theoretically could benefit inflammatory skin conditions. Nonetheless, robust clinical trials confirming its effectiveness and safety for dermatitis in humans are lacking. Therefore, while the traditional use is well-established, scientific validation remains limited, and the overall evidence base is modest.
