Cannabis sativa oil, often referred to as hemp seed oil, has gained popularity as a topical agent for supporting or treating dermatitis, including atopic dermatitis and eczema. Scientific interest in its use is largely due to its rich content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), particularly linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid, which are known to support skin barrier function and reduce transepidermal water loss. Several small clinical studies and laboratory investigations suggest that topical application of hemp seed oil can help alleviate symptoms of dermatitis such as dryness, itchiness, and inflammation by improving skin hydration and modulating inflammatory responses.

A 2005 randomized, double-blind crossover study published in the journal Journal of Dermatological Treatment found that dietary hempseed oil improved skin dryness and itchiness in patients with atopic dermatitis. More recent in vitro and animal studies have shown that cannabinoids, including those found in Cannabis sativa, may have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects on the skin. However, most commercial Cannabis sativa oil used in cosmetics is low in cannabinoids and primarily valued for its fatty acid profile.

Despite these promising preliminary findings, larger, well-controlled human trials are still needed to establish the efficacy and safety of Cannabis sativa oil in the treatment of dermatitis. Therefore, the evidence supporting its use can be considered moderate (3/5), reflecting a growing body of scientific research but not yet reaching the level of robust clinical validation.
