Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Copaiba balsam, an oleoresin obtained from the Copaifera tree species native to South America, has a long history of traditional use in folk medicine, particularly in Brazil. It has been applied topically for various skin conditions, including dermatitis, wounds, and ulcers, largely due to its reputed anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. The traditional use is based on empirical observations rather than rigorous scientific validation. Some in vitro studies have found that copaiba oil contains sesquiterpenes and diterpenic acids, which may contribute to anti-inflammatory effects, but clinical trials in humans with dermatitis are lacking or of low quality. Systematic reviews of herbal remedies for dermatitis rarely mention copaiba balsam, indicating that controlled, peer-reviewed evidence is extremely limited. Most recommendations for its use in dermatitis are based on ethnobotanical reports and anecdotal evidence rather than robust clinical data. Therefore, while it is traditionally used for this purpose, the scientific evidence base is weak, and more research is needed to confirm efficacy and safety in dermatitis treatment.
