Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Flavonoids are a diverse group of plant polyphenols found in fruits, vegetables, and certain beverages, well-known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. Several laboratory and animal studies have investigated the effects of flavonoids on skin inflammation, including dermatitis. The anti-inflammatory properties of flavonoids are attributed to their ability to modulate key signaling pathways, reduce oxidative stress, and inhibit the release of pro-inflammatory mediators such as cytokines. For example, certain flavonoids like quercetin, luteolin, and apigenin have been shown in preclinical models to reduce symptoms of atopic and contact dermatitis. Some small-scale human trials and topical formulations containing flavonoids have reported improvements in symptoms such as erythema, itching, and lesion size. However, these studies are often limited in size, lack standardization in the type and dose of flavonoid, and results are sometimes inconsistent. There is not yet large-scale, high-quality clinical evidence to firmly establish efficacy, and "flavonoid (unspecified)" is a broad category, making it difficult to generalize findings. Therefore, while there is preliminary scientific evidence suggesting potential benefit in dermatitis, it remains modest and inconclusive, warranting further research before widespread clinical recommendation.
