Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium cannabinum) has a history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, where it was used for a variety of conditions, including as a topical application for skin problems such as wounds, ulcers, and occasionally dermatitis. The basis for its use lies in folk tradition, which attributed anti-inflammatory and cleansing properties to its leaves and extracts. These traditional uses were documented in older herbal texts and by some 19th-century herbalists, who recommended poultices or infusions for irritated or inflamed skin.

However, there is minimal scientific research evaluating the efficacy of Hemp Agrimony for dermatitis specifically. Modern clinical studies are lacking, and while the plant contains compounds such as flavonoids and sesquiterpene lactones that have shown some anti-inflammatory effects in vitro, there is no robust evidence to confirm its benefit for dermatitis in humans. Safety data are also limited, and the plant is known to contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can be hepatotoxic. Thus, its use for dermatitis is rooted in tradition rather than scientific validation, and caution is advised due to potential toxicity.
