Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Fatty acids, especially essential fatty acids (EFAs) such as omega-3 and omega-6, have scientific support for their role in maintaining skin barrier function and modulating inflammation, both of which are highly relevant in dermatitis. Several clinical studies and reviews have shown that supplementation with certain fatty acids (notably, evening primrose oil, borage oil, and fish oil) can improve symptoms in atopic dermatitis, a common form of eczema. Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid found in some plant oils, has been particularly studied for its anti-inflammatory effects and ability to improve skin hydration.

Systematic reviews indicate mixed results: some meta-analyses suggest modest benefits, especially in individuals with EFA deficiencies, while others find limited clinical significance. Nevertheless, the biological rationale is strong—deficiencies in EFAs can impair skin barrier integrity, leading to increased transepidermal water loss and inflammation, which are hallmarks of dermatitis. Supplementation may be more effective in populations with poor dietary intake of EFAs or specific genetic predispositions affecting fatty acid metabolism.

In summary, while not a first-line therapy, fatty acid or fat/oil supplements have a scientific basis for use in supporting skin health and managing dermatitis, particularly as adjuncts to conventional treatments. More robust, high-quality clinical trials are still needed to clarify efficacy and optimal dosing.
