Evidence supporting the use of: Storax
For the health condition: Dermatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Storax (Styrax benzoin resin) has a long history of traditional use in treating various skin conditions, including dermatitis. In traditional medicine systems, particularly in Europe and the Middle East, storax has been used topically for its purported antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, and healing properties. Ancient texts and pharmacopoeias reference its application to wounds, ulcers, and eczematous skin as a balm or ointment, often mixed with other herbal ingredients or oils.
Despite this traditional use, modern scientific validation for storax in the treatment of dermatitis is scant. There are a few laboratory studies suggesting that storax has mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, but robust clinical trials or systematic reviews supporting its efficacy in dermatitis are lacking. Most references to storax in dermatological applications remain anecdotal or are based on historical precedent rather than rigorous scientific evaluation.
Therefore, the use of storax for dermatitis is justified primarily on traditional grounds, with very limited supporting evidence from modern research. It is important to note that storax can be a contact allergen for some individuals and may itself cause allergic contact dermatitis. As such, its topical application should be approached with caution, particularly in those with known sensitivities.
