Boysenberry, a hybrid berry, has been researched for potential health benefits, including its effects on diabetes. Several preclinical studies have examined boysenberry extracts or purified anthocyanins (the pigments responsible for its dark color) for anti-diabetic effects. These studies, primarily in animal models or in vitro, suggest that boysenberry extracts may help regulate blood glucose levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce oxidative stress associated with diabetes. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of carbohydrate-digesting enzymes (such as α-glucosidase), modulation of glucose uptake, and anti-inflammatory effects. However, human clinical data are very limited. Most available evidence comes from broader studies on berries rich in anthocyanins, such as blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries, rather than boysenberry specifically. While these related berries have shown some promise in improving markers of glucose metabolism in humans, direct evidence for boysenberry is lacking. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale grounded in preclinical research and extrapolation from related berries, the evidence level (2/5) reflects the lack of robust clinical trials specifically on boysenberry for diabetes. In summary, boysenberry shows potential for supporting diabetes management based on early laboratory and animal studies, but there is insufficient clinical evidence to recommend its use as a treatment or supportive agent for diabetes at this time.
