Citrus bioflavonoids, a group of plant-derived polyphenolic compounds found primarily in citrus fruits, have been investigated for their potential benefits in managing diabetes. The rationale for their use is grounded in scientific research rather than tradition. Preclinical studies (in vitro and in animal models) have demonstrated that citrus bioflavonoids such as hesperidin, naringin, and rutin may exert antidiabetic effects through several mechanisms: improving insulin sensitivity, reducing oxidative stress, decreasing inflammation, and modulating glucose metabolism pathways. For example, hesperidin has been shown to decrease blood glucose levels and improve lipid profiles in diabetic rats. Some small clinical studies in humans have reported modest improvements in glycemic control and markers of oxidative stress when citrus flavonoids are used as a supplement. However, the overall quality and volume of human evidence remain limited. There are few large, well-designed randomized controlled trials, and results are sometimes inconsistent. Most of the available data come from animal studies or in vitro experiments, which do not always translate to meaningful clinical benefits for people with diabetes. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some early evidence supporting the use of citrus bioflavonoids for diabetes, the strength of this evidence is currently low (rated 2/5). More robust clinical trials are needed before these compounds can be recommended as a standard adjunct therapy for diabetes management.
