Spirulina, a blue-green algae, has been investigated for its potential antidiabetic properties. Several animal studies and a modest number of human clinical trials suggest that spirulina supplementation may help in reducing fasting blood glucose levels and improving lipid profiles in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The proposed mechanisms include antioxidant action, enhancement of insulin sensitivity, and modulation of lipid metabolism.

Notably, a few randomized controlled trials in humans have reported improvements in glycemic control, with reductions in fasting blood sugar and HbA1c levels after spirulina supplementation. However, these studies are generally small, short-term, and sometimes lack rigorous controls. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of spirulina’s phycocyanin and other bioactive compounds are hypothesized to help attenuate the oxidative stress associated with diabetes, potentially contributing to its beneficial effects.

Despite these promising findings, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are limited, and larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety. Thus, while there is some scientific basis for using spirulina as an adjunct in diabetes management, it should not replace standard medical care. Patients considering spirulina should consult with their healthcare providers.
