Evidence supporting the use of: Delphinidin
For the health condition: Diabetic Retinopathy
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Delphinidin is an anthocyanidin, a type of flavonoid found in various berries and pigmented fruits and vegetables. There is emerging scientific interest in the potential of delphinidin to support diabetic retinopathy, primarily based on its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Preclinical studies have shown that delphinidin can inhibit retinal angiogenesis and reduce vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression, which are both involved in the progression of diabetic retinopathy. For example, in vitro research published in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science (2015) demonstrated that delphinidin suppressed high glucose-induced VEGF expression and decreased apoptosis in retinal endothelial cells. Animal studies have supported these findings, with evidence suggesting that dietary anthocyanins may help protect against retinal damage in diabetic models.
However, clinical evidence in humans is currently very limited. Most studies are preclinical or use cell culture and animal models, and there are no large, well-designed human trials directly evaluating delphinidin supplementation for diabetic retinopathy. Thus, while the biological rationale and early experimental evidence are promising, the evidence level remains modest and preliminary. Delphinidin is not yet established as a standard or recommended therapy for diabetic retinopathy, and more research is needed before it can be recommended for this condition.
