Bacillus clausii for Diarrhea: Scientific Evidence Synopsis
Bacillus clausii is a spore-forming probiotic bacterium frequently used in the management of diarrhea, especially in children. Its use has been primarily scientifically driven rather than based on long-standing traditional usage. Several clinical studies and reviews have evaluated its effectiveness in reducing the duration and severity of both acute infectious diarrhea and antibiotic-associated diarrhea.
Research indicates that B. clausii may help restore the balance of intestinal flora disrupted by infection or antibiotics. Its spores are resistant to heat and gastric acidity, allowing it to reach the intestine alive. Once there, B. clausii competes with pathogenic bacteria, produces antimicrobial substances, and stimulates the immune response. A notable randomized controlled trial published in Pediatrics (2007) found that B. clausii significantly reduced the duration of acute diarrhea in children compared to placebo. Additional systematic reviews and meta-analyses, such as those published in European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences (2018), have concluded that B. clausii is effective and well-tolerated as an adjunct to oral rehydration therapy.
However, while there is a growing body of evidence, the quality and consistency of studies vary, and some trials have methodological limitations. Therefore, the evidence level is rated as moderate (3/5), with further large-scale, high-quality studies needed to fully validate its efficacy and optimal usage protocols.
